A Brief History

Fort Hill United Methodist Church
In 1899, a small group of believers met in a former saloon on Old Forest Road and began a Sunday School that would take root and become Fort Hill United Methodist Church. In 1927, after having used several other locations, the church moved to its present location on the corner of Oakridge Boulevard and Memorial Avenue. The Sunday school building was built that year.
A ground breaking ceremony for the sanctuary was held on May 15, 1955. The first worship service was celebrated on March 10, 1957, and a recital was played on the new pipe organ.
Today, Fort Hill United Methodist Church strives to provide a place that is welcoming, accessible and available to all. Our church has a long tradition of excellence in music with a congregation that enjoys a rich variety of music, from old gospel songs to contemporary Christian hymns to great hymns of the faith. We also have a growing youth and children's programs. The church is handicap accessible complete with an elevator and ramps to accomodate all persons. In 2010, we celebrated 102 years of mission and ministry in Lynchburg, Virginia! Everyone is welcome to join us each and every time our doors are open!
